The networking moves I actually use

Here are some things that I do to keep my web of connections warm, growing, and feeling appreciated.

Many of them are things you can do, now, regardless of how big or small your network is right now…

Remember it’s about them, not you. So bring to that Zoom or that coffee meeting 1, 2, 3 ideas of ways you might be able to help them out. It takes a while to develop this muscle — here’s a tactic I used to help me do that. Giving them some ideas proactively is much better than “Let me know how I can help.”

Flip the script on “No thanks”: When you can’t attend an event, you still have a great network-building opportunity. Recommend someone else you think highly of to take your place to the person who invited you. Win-win-win.

Always (re) introduce yourself: And other tips from Techcrunch’s founder.

Strike while the iron is hot to keep a new connection alive.

Always reply to a prior email thread when you’re getting back in touch with a busy person you’ve not emailed or met with in a while. This is a subtle way of reminding the receiver “You know me” vs. them seeing your email and thinking it’s a cold one that they should ignore.

Look at their job board – Whether it’s a founder or an employee, take a look at who their company is hiring. Referrals are always appreciated.

TELL THEM WHAT HAPPENED. When someone in your network helps you out, let them know how it pans out. Trust me — people love it, and you’re not bothering them. I’m not perfect at this, either, but I’m getting better.
