How to write a LinkedIn recommendation for someone in startups and VC

You’ve probably written (or received) a LinkedIn recommendation that says a lot of nice things but nothing memorable. Here’s the 3-part formula I use to write ones that actually stand out. I’ll use a real example, too.

Doesn’t matter if you are looking for a job in VC, or startups, or in none of the above, this framework works for all kinds of people and jobs 👇🏻

📝 Overall style: Short paragraphs. Not a wall of text. If you feel like it needs a tl;dr, it’s too long! ↙️

🎭 1st section: Set the stage. Let ’em know how you know the person you’re recommending i.e. what was their role, what was your role, and what was the overall context and timing of your work together. ⬇️

💪 2nd section: In detail, what about their work with you was impressive? How did it stand out? How did it contribute to the success of the project/launch/whatever you worked on? Metrics and superlatives (eg “the best”, “the fastest”), if appropriate, are always great to include. ⤵️

🎁 3rd section: Put a bow on it! Like you can see above, I used this last part as an opportunity to talk about Phil’s team-building skills, which I hadn’t covered previously. ↙️

Why did I share this today? So many people are looking for a new beginning in January, or looking to hire someone looking for that new beginning. If there’s a friend or colleague that you want to thank for their work, this is a fantastic (and low lift) way to do it! 🙏

I hope you use this framework to write just one recommendation today … or to coach someone that you’d love a recommendation from!
