I’m about to show you a VC job search hack that almost anyone can do.
Even if you don’t have a great network in the VC world yet.
Here goes…
2 VC job seekers (clones!) interview for an associate role at the same firm.
They both interview like pros, too!
But here’s where the road forks:
After the interview….
Seeker #1 emails them every week or so after the interview to check in on status of the position. (“Hey, did you make a hire yet? Please let me know.”)
Seeker #2 emails them every week or so after the interview, too.
But instead of asking about the job, they do something helpful like:
- Checking the firm’s portfolio company jobs page to search for jobs at the VC’s portfolio companies
- Then finding a job that would be a great fit for one of their friends or relatives or co-workers or acquaintances
- And then pinging that person to let them know about the job, and mention to them that they have an “in” with the company if they want to pursue it.
If Seeker #2’s pal says:
“Heck yeah, I’d love to learn more about the gig”…
…then they drop a nice note to the VC.
With a subject line mentioning the portfolio company (so they’re more lkely to open it).
Remember:
Part of what many VCs tout is their value add around hiring and recruiting.
So if you help them look good by sending them great people who could work in their portfolio…
…you’re going to look good, too.
