This week’s Moves in VC contains 12 Moves and 11 new fund announcements, compiled from 40+ sources.
Raghu Raghuram, a16z’s newly announced Managing Partner, and I overlapped at VMware
He was in product and I was in PSO. Which meant that practically every week I was out in the field with customers (usually in a flyover state … but also this one time in Kosovo) while he was back at HQ making sure we were shipping the right things to our customers.
Fortunately I have some friends who worked closely with Raghu over a long period of time. And I pinged one of them to get their take today about the news. Here’s what they said about him:
- “Quietly humble, but incredibly thoughtful”
- “Brilliant product strategist”
- “I was always impressed by his thinking on … how to build winning products and win markets”
- “Pensive, persuasive vs. ‘perspirational’ leader … definitely erred more on the pensive and persuasive end of the spectrum vs. hard-nose top-down leadership.”
There’s a firm building lesson in all of this.
Most funds these days try to go heavy on ex-operators – folks who have built from zero-to-exit. a16z has a number of those folks on the team, of course.
But they’ve also made a point of bringing on product strategists. Folks who are playing chess … while everyone else in a market is playing checkers.
Raghu’s hiring is the most recent example. But you could also look at when they brought on Steven Sinofsky. Or when Benedict Evans joined the firm.
Do you think VC firms need strategists? Or are ex-founders with exits “enough” to build a generational firm?
Hit ‘Reply’ and let me know. I’d love to hear what you think, and I read everything you send my way.
