Position Summary
The American Heart Association has an excellent opportunity for a Principal, Social Impact Funds .
This position can be home-based.
This is a full-time, benefits-eligible, grant-funded opportunity. Current funding will expire on 3/1/2027, with the possibility of extension.
The American Heart Association’s Social Impact Funds deploy mission-driven capital to improve health outcomes and advance healthcare. Working across the social drivers of health, the Fund focuses on three core areas: healthcare access and quality, food security, and economic empowerment.
Through grants, loans, equity investments, and other innovative financing approaches, the Social Impact Funds support organizations developing scalable solutions that improve lives and strengthen communities. The Fund partners with entrepreneurs, nonprofit organizations, investors, foundations, healthcare stakeholders, and public sector organizations to accelerate impact and create sustainable change.

Responsibilities
The Principal will support the sourcing, evaluation, execution, and management of impact investments across grants, debt, equity, and hybrid capital structures. This role combines investment analysis, relationship management, portfolio support, and ecosystem engagement to advance the Social Impact Fund’s mission of improving health outcomes through innovative capital deployment.
The ideal candidate is intellectually curious, relationship-oriented, and comfortable working across sectors. They enjoy building partnerships, evaluating investment opportunities, and developing creative solutions that align financial performance with measurable social impact.
Key Responsibilities
Investment Sourcing & Origination
- Identify and cultivate investment opportunities aligned with the Fund’s investment strategy, impact objectives, and deployment goals.
- Build and maintain relationships with entrepreneurs, nonprofit leaders, investors, foundations, accelerators, healthcare organizations, and ecosystem partners.
- Develop trusted partnerships that enhance the Fund’s visibility, sourcing network, and investment pipeline.
Investment Due Diligence & Execution
- Conduct financial, operational, market, and impact due diligence on prospective investments.
- Analyze business models, financial projections, capital needs, and potential risks and opportunities.
- Support investment structuring across grants, debt, equity, recoverable grants, and other mission-driven financing approaches.
- Prepare investment memoranda, presentations, and recommendations for Investment Committee review.
- Partner with legal, finance, and external stakeholders throughout transaction execution and closing.
- Portfolio Management & Value Creatio.
- Manage relationships with portfolio organizations and external partners.
- Monitor financial and impact performance against established objectives.
- Support portfolio companies and organizations through strategic guidance, introductions, ecosystem connections, and problem-solving.
- Identify emerging risks and opportunities and recommend appropriate actions.
- Serve as a board observer or support governance activities as appropriate.
Impact Measurement & Strategy
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to track, measure, and report health and social impact outcomes.
- Support development and refinement of impact measurement frameworks and reporting processes.
- Help ensure investment decisions incorporate both financial performance and mission impact considerations.
Industry & Ecosystem Engagement
- Represent the Social Impact Funds externally through conferences, industry events, working groups, and partner meetings.
- Build relationships with co-investors, philanthropic organizations, government agencies, and strategic partners.
- Support fundraising, donor engagement, and strategic communications efforts as needed.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
- Three (3) years of professional experience in venture capital, private equity, lending, impact investing, consulting, entrepreneurship, foundation investing, healthcare innovation, nonprofit leadership, or related fields.
- Experience conducting investment diligence, market analysis, financial analysis, or strategic evaluation of organizations and opportunities.
- Strong analytical and financial skills with the ability to assess business models, risks, and growth opportunities.
- Experience developing and managing relationships with entrepreneurs, investors, community organizations, foundations, corporations, or other stakeholders.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present recommendations and findings to senior leaders and investment committees.
- Strong project management skills and ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to collaborate effectively across functions, sectors, and organizational boundaries.
- Ability to travel up to 20% local and overnight stay.
Preferred Qualifications
- Five (5) – Seven (7)+ years of relevant professional experience.
- Advanced degree (MBA, MPH, MPA, JD, or related field).
- Experience evaluating or managing investments across multiple asset classes or capital structures, including grants, debt, equity, catalytic capital, blended finance, or mission-driven investment vehicles.
- Experience working with healthcare organizations, social enterprises, nonprofit organizations, foundations, government agencies, or impact-focused businesses.
- Board, board observer, governance, or advisory experience.
- Familiarity with impact measurement and management frameworks.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
